What to Do When Facing Sexism at the Workplace in India
You're not alone if you've faced a situation where you felt belittled, ignored, or discriminated against at work because of your gender. Many Indian women have been in your shoes, feeling frustrated, helpless, and unsure of what to do next. It's time to take a stand and know that you have the right to a respectful and safe work environment.
What You'll Need
- Confidence
- Support from colleagues or a mentor
- Knowledge of company policies
Document Incidents
Keep a record of any incidents where you felt you were treated unfairly or discriminated against. Note down the date, time, location, and details of what happened. This will help you track patterns and provide evidence if you need to report the incident.
Talk to Someone You Trust
Reach out to a colleague, mentor, or HR representative you trust and share your experience with them. They may be able to offer you guidance, support, or help you navigate the company's policies and procedures.
Have a specific question you can't ask anyone? Ask it anonymously. No name. No judgment.
Know Your Rights
Familiarize yourself with the company's policies and procedures for dealing with sexism and harassment. Know your rights under Indian law, including the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
Report the Incident
If you feel comfortable doing so, report the incident to your supervisor, HR, or a designated person in your company. Be prepared to provide evidence and details of what happened.
Take Care of Yourself
Dealing with sexism at work can be emotionally draining. Make sure to take care of your physical and mental health by seeking support from friends, family, or a professional counselor.
"Remember, your voice matters, and speaking up against sexism is the first step towards creating a more inclusive workplace."
