How to Set Boundaries with Your Boss and Colleagues as a Working Woman in India

You’re staring at your screen late at night, heart racing because a colleague just pinged you for a 'quick task' that will take two hours. You feel guilty saying no, but you're exhausted, and your personal life is suffering. You aren't alone; many of us feel pressured to be the 'perfect, always-available' employee. It’s time to stop apologizing for having a life outside of work.
What You'll Need
- A calm, firm mindset
- Clear communication scripts
- Confidence to say 'no'
- Documented work hours
Define your 'Off' hours
Decide when your workday ends and stick to it. If you finish at 6 PM, stop checking emails or messages after 6:30 PM. If you are constantly available at 9 PM, people will expect it every single day. Communicate this clearly: 'I will pick this up first thing tomorrow morning.'
Learn the art of the 'Polite No'
You don't need to give a long explanation for why you can't take on extra work. Just say, 'I would love to help, but I am currently at capacity with my current projects. If this is a priority, which of my existing tasks should I push back?' This puts the decision back on your boss.

Keep a paper trail
In many Indian offices, verbal requests get lost or blamed on you. If a colleague asks for something off-task or outside your role, send a quick email: 'As discussed, I am working on X, so I won't be able to handle Y right now.' This protects you during performance reviews.
"Setting a boundary isn't about being rude; it's about teaching people how to respect your time and your talent."
