Take a deep breath and look at yourself in the mirror. You might be feeling confused, scared, or even pressured by family or society about decisions regarding your own body. Please know this: you are not alone, and you are not doing anything wrong by wanting to understand your own rights. Your body, your choices, and your future belong to you. Let’s walk through this together, step by step, so you can feel empowered and informed.
What You'll Need
- A calm space to read
- Patience with yourself
- Your Aadhar card (for medical ID)
- A trusted friend or doctor
Know the Law on Abortion (MTP Act)
In India, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act allows you to seek an abortion up to 24 weeks for various reasons, including if the pregnancy affects your mental or physical health. You do not need your husband’s or parents' permission to get an abortion if you are an adult.
Understand Your Right to Contraception
You have the right to choose how to prevent pregnancy. Whether you want to use birth control pills, IUDs, or condoms, these are your choices. Pharmacies in India sell most of these over the counter, and you have the right to ask for privacy when purchasing them.
Have a specific question you can't ask anyone? Ask it anonymously. No name. No judgment.
Prioritize Your Mental and Physical Consent
Reproductive rights also mean the right to say 'no' to unprotected sex or unwanted pregnancies. You have the right to discuss your reproductive plans with your partner. If you feel forced or coerced, please reach out to a women’s helpline or a trusted counselor who can support you without judgment.
"Your reproductive health is not a family debate; it is your fundamental right protected by the law of the land."
