How to Introduce Solid Foods to Your Baby the Indian Way Safely

You’re standing in front of the mirror, baby monitor in one hand, wondering if you’re ready for the 'solid food phase.' It’s scary, isn't it? Will they choke? Which dal is best? You feel the pressure to do it perfectly, but believe me, every mom has felt this exact knot in her stomach. You aren't alone, and you’re doing a great job.
What You'll Need
- Patience (lots of it!)
- A clean, high chair or a safe place to sit
- Freshly washed seasonal vegetables
- Moong dal and rice
- Clean, small baby spoon
Wait for the right signs
Before you start, ensure your baby can sit with support, has good neck control, and shows interest when you eat. Ideally, wait until they are 6 months old. Don't rush just because someone says 'the baby looks hungry.'
Start with thin, single-ingredient purees
Begin with something gentle like watery dal water or a smooth mashed apple. For the first few days, offer just one or two teaspoons. This helps you watch for any allergic reactions or tummy discomfort.

Introduce textures gradually
Once they are comfortable with liquids, move to 'mashed' foods like khichdi (well-cooked rice and dal). Use a fork to mash it well so there are no big chunks. Slowly increase the thickness as they learn to chew and swallow.
"Start slow and trust your baby’s cues; food before one is mostly just for fun and learning textures, not just for calories."
